Almost every steel casting ships heat treated — the question is which treatment. Four cover the vast majority of purchase orders: annealing (softest, most machinable), normalizing (the general-purpose default), quenching and tempering (high strength) and solution annealing (mandatory for austenitic stainless like CF8M). The right choice follows from the material grade and the load case — and the wrong choice either wastes money or fails in service.
Why As-Cast Steel Is Not Shipped Raw
Steel solidifying slowly in a mold grows a coarse, chemically uneven structure with internal stresses. Left untreated, it machines unpredictably, varies in hardness, and can distort after machining as stresses release. Heat treatment resets the structure: uniform grain, predictable properties, stable dimensions.

Matching Treatment to Common Grades
- ASTM A216 WCB/WCC (carbon steel): normalized, or normalized and tempered. Q&T only for special strength requirements.
- ASTM A148 structural grades: normalized and tempered or Q&T, driven by the grade’s strength class.
- CF8/CF8M stainless: solution annealed, always. Skipping it ruins corrosion resistance — verify it on the certificate.
- 17-4 PH (CB7Cu-1): solution treat plus precipitation aging (H900–H1150), a different mechanism entirely.
- Ductile iron A536: usually as-cast or annealed for ferritic grades; Q&T for 120-90-02.
Cost and Lead-Time Reality
Heat treatment adds furnace cycles measured in hours-to-days, but its schedule impact is mostly about batching: foundries fire furnaces full, so a small rush order may wait for a load. If your delivery is tight, say so at RFQ — a good foundry plans the furnace slot with the pour date. Treatments with quenching add straightening/inspection time for slender parts.
What Buyers Should Verify
- The certificate states the actual treatment cycle, not just “heat treated”
- Hardness or mechanicals tested after final treatment, at an agreed location
- For stainless: solution annealing explicitly confirmed
- For welded repairs at the foundry: post-weld heat treatment consistent with the base cycle

Can I skip heat treatment to save cost?
For structural steel castings, no reputable foundry will agree — properties and machinability depend on it. The saving is trivial against the risk.
Which treatment gives the best machinability?
Full annealing. If your machining cost dominates piece price, annealed condition plus a later stress relieve can beat machining a normalized part.
Does heat treatment fix casting defects?
No. It changes structure, not geometry — porosity, shrinkage and inclusions remain. Defect control happens in the foundry process itself.
